Service Learning
About the Program
Service learning offers students the opportunity to combine theory and practice while also making a positive contribution to communities in Dublin. This type of experiential learning can be life changing for both the student and the communities they serve. Students take a 3 credit course in Service Learning which combines a placement and an academic component throughout the semester. Students also take up to 4 other courses (see list below). This program is available in fall and spring only.

Please note the Minimum GPA is 2.75.

Typical areas for placement
Service learning placements are typically in voluntary organizations, community groups, NGO’s or state-sponsored agencies. Students must be aware that their primary focus must be to offer service to the particular group they are working with. Students can expect to spend between 4 - 6 hours weekly in their placement. The following is a sample list of placements:
pre-school and after-school clubs, community support groups, active retired groups, Alzheimer care, literacy groups, working with people with different forms of disability, ecology and the environment groups, migrant groups, homeless agencies.

For this program, you will take the Service Learning course plus 3/4 courses in your chosen area. The main areas are:
Irish Studies
International Business
Liberal Arts
Credits
In fall and spring you must enroll for at least four courses to satisfy the immigration requirements of your stay in Ireland.
Each course is 3 credits and will meet for 45 contact hours. Elective courses generally meet 2 times per week, Monday-Thursday.
It’s vitally important you discuss the total credits and choice of courses you plan to take with your home institution.
